Xel Ha

on February 21, 2012

There is no getting away from it Xel-ha is a theme park.  Advertising itself as the world largest aquarium it is set in a large natural lagoon.  It is essentially a snorkelling theme park, but at to that zip wires, rope bridges, cliffs to jump off, parrots, toucans, and all inclusive restaurants and you have a theme park (and at $79 each not a cheap one).

It is a beautiful place, and as we got there early we could enjoy it until the crowds arrived.  Actually it never really was too crowded except for around the restaurants.  We swam across the lagoon and had the place to ourselves.  Jon, Adeline and Félicité saw a 4ft long baracuda, and we all saw a rainbow parrot fish that was at least 80cm long.  We had a great time.  The staff are helpful, there are lifejackets everywhere and everything is immpecably clean.  Félicité (at 5yrs old) was the star of the show.  Not only did she learn to snorkel, and got quite good at it, she swam for miles, and jumped of the cliff 7 times.

Of course the main event, and the reason we went, was the dolphins.  These are not included in the entrance fee.  $80 per peson gets you half an hours contact with the dolphins.  It is a once in a lifetime kind of thing, and we loved it.

It really was a remarkable day;
